Crocheters: 2 questions concerning refillable/reusable catnip toy?
I just started crocheting amigurumi, and my sister asked me to make her cats some catnip toys with a bell inside, which I don’t have a problem doing at my level. However, I would like to figure out how to make them refillable and reusable. I was thinking about buttons, but I’m concerned that the cats will be able to chew them off (if you’ve ever dealt with cats, I think you’ll know this is a valid concern). I can probably do velcro, but I wonder if it’ll alter the shapes of the toys by being too bulky. She wants a strawberry, a mouse, and a ball. I can velcro the top of the strawberry easy enough, but what can I do for the ball and ball-shaped mouse?
Also, is fiber fill machine washable and dry-able? Can you tell me if there is a way to stuff these so that the catnip and bell can be removed and the toy can be washed?
Thanks!! I’ve tried Googling patterns but nothing came up for the toy to be refillable.
I’ve made many cat toys and have found that just sprinkling dried catnip on the outside or rubbing it on the outside works fine to renew the scent.
my cats always liked a long cylinder shape where they could wrap their front legs around and then kick into it with the hind legs. I’ve also made small balls with a four foot string of chain stitches attached. Cats go ape when they see a string dragged along the ground.
Yes they can be washed but I would not dry them on a high heat. I let mine air dry and no perfumes in the soap and no fabric softener.
