I bought my kitty a catnip toy?

I bought my kitty a catnip toy. It’s the kind that it looks like a mouse, and underneath it there’s a little pouch closed with velcro. Inside the pouch is where you put the catnip. I brought it home and gave it to her and now she’s rolling around on the ground rubbing the mouse toy all over her face and biting it. It’s really cute. What makes the cat react like that?

ive always wondered that myself and the only thing i ever found is that cats are presumably reacting to catnip’s strong odor. The oil from catnip leaves contains a chemical called trans-neptalactone, the odor of which closely resembles a substance present in a female cat’s urine. i do know that all species of felines react the same way. but i have encountered cats that dont care about it and kittens usually dont care about it until the get older. but anyways, its fun to watch them, my cat does the same thing, rubs it on her face. i usually poor some on the floor if im going to vacuum so that my cat cat have a little fun, but then i dont worry about the mess cause im about to vacuum anyways and i buy catnip and poor it in old socks and tie a knot in the socks and the cats love it. have fun! =^.^=

Catnip is like a drug to kitties – they smell it and go a little goofy. She’s rubbing it over her face because of the scent of it, it usually lasts a little while and then she’ll calm down and just cuddle it. Since it is kind of druggish, you should supervise your kitty when she’s playing with the toy and put it away when you’re not there. :)
