Is catnip safe for my cat?
I just bought my almost 7 year old Siamese a fun catnip toy and she loves it. But in just minutes after playing with it she started drooling all over it and I noticed her eyes were watering a bit. Is this normal when cats get their paws on catnip? I was reading the label on the toy and it said that it is not a drug or will not intoxicate or harm them in any way but I just want to make sure she will be safe playing with it.
Catnip for cats is similiar to marijuana for people. It’s a plant found in nature, just like marijuana is, that can give a cat a feeling of euphoria (feeling silly and a little spaced out) but sometimes it can make them a little paranoid (like hiding under chairs of being jumpy). She is drooling because she is probably very relaxed and happy, some cats do this when they are really enjoying a good scratch on their back or behind their ears, and she is glassy eyed from the effects of the plant – it’s drying and her eyes are producing more tears. Also, it is probably affecting her pupils. It’s normal and it will not hurt her. Just like marijuana, not everyone reacts the same way, nor has a good time, but it sounds like she is! If she begins to ignore her toy you can refresh it by adding more catnip through a hole you sew up or by rubbing some on the toy and then shaking off the excess, depending on the type of toy. If you ever buy her loose catnip only give her about 1 teaspoon at a time and the best way is on a paper plate so she can roll in it, too, just like cats like to do in nature.
