Why do cats react to catnip?

I was on my Computer earlier, when I turned to find my cat being unusually "fussy"…..at the floor that she was laid on. I also noticed that she was biting and playing with something – though I was unable to recognize exactly what it was. Intrigued as to why my cat was doing this, I went up to her, and found her catnip toy (which I bought yesterday) next to her. It was the toy.

This then raised a question in my mind, why is it that cats react to catnip?

They get "high"

It is a sedative and it can be euphoric to cats (mimicking pheromones). It also has a history of use among humans for it sedative and numbing properties (to including being smoked).
