How do you grow and prepare your own catnip?

I plan on making catnip filled toys.
I want to keep the plant indoors.
How long does catnip last?

Thanks:)

In Iowa (zone 5), it grows as a weed, usually around the bottoms of trees and bushes. You can move it, split it, pot it up, or whatever you want. It smells very strong. My cats, over the years, have taught me that the first time they smell it, they don’t react much. However, with increased exposure, they go nuts! If I give it to my 4 indoor cats, they each react differently. They roll over onto their backs, lick themselves, attack each other, and (be careful), sometimes bite me. They ordinarily would never bite me, but catnip seems to make them kinda’ goofy and sometimes they jump around with alot of energy like they’re "high" for about 10 minutes.
You can dry catnip between layers of cardboard pressed between boards. The more moisture it contains, the more reaction you get from cats. But to put it into a toy, you want it dried and crumbled so it doesn’t get stinky. It only takes about a week to dry, depending on how you do it.

you can buy the seeds off the seed rack in WalMart or any garden or hardware store. Plant in dirt, tend, harvest, dry, use. It isn’t hard..
