Is it normal for a cat to try to drown its prey?

My mother’s 7 month old male cat hunts pencils, pens, milk caps, medicine bottles, catnip toys, various bits of paper, etc…and whatever the item, it inevitably ends up in the water dish.

My son’s kitten who is also seven months old, does the exact same thing. He was only four weeks old when he came to live with us and my son gave him a small teddy to have as his own.

We’ve lost count how many times the cat has ‘drowned’ his beloved toy.

I thought that he actually drowns real "prey". This is just a curiosity. Cats are curious animals and this yours is fascinated by putting random stuff to water dish. Aquamaniac! :)

It’s nothing unusual, but just interesting. :)

On the Serengeti, the big cats of Africa would hang around ponds and rivers for their prey. Sounds like your cat needs a vacation. If passports and airfare is too expensive to fly your cat to Africa, might I suggest dropping your cat off in the Mojave Desert, in California? Don’t worry, your cat will be fine. This is what he wants, he’ll find his way home eventually. But in the meantime, you should get a dog.

You sure it’s not washing it’s prey like a raccoon or playing with it? Our cats play with the mice they catch until I intervene and put the poor mouse out of its misery.

Cats are stupid animals, he’s probably trying to soften it up so he can eat it. I had a cat that would torture mice for hours on end. I swear he threw wild parties while I slept. I would wake up and my house would be a shamble and the cat would be all hungover looking. I never caught him with his actual friends over, but I did watch him torture a mouse for over an hour. Then I got bored and went to bed.
