What is catnip and why does it drive my cats wild.?

I gave each of my cats little catnip toys for Christmas and they are going wild and have been for the past half hour.! What is that stuff.?

Catnip is like marijuana for cats. my cat, benny, is like 17 years old and he rolls in his and then goes to sleep? basically it gets cats stoned.

Catnip is basically drugs for cats. It releases a chemical that stimulates the pheremonic senses in cats and makes them euphoric. Ur kitties are high!!!

Catnip is a member of the Mint family. It’s not a drug in the hallucinogenic sense, in fact people brew it a tea for its relaxing properties. Most cats just like the scent. If you give it to them loose they will eat it or wallow in it. Some cats don’t react to it at all, and most kittens don’t for the first 6 or 8 months.

It means your cats are sensitive to catnip, which means that both parents were likely sensitive to catnip, since it is inherited.

The active compound is nepetalactone, which is an oil that is found in capsules in the leaves, and catnip is a member of the mint family. When a cat chews the leaves, it releases the oils. Some cats will roll around a lot, and others may go nuts for awhile.

Since the oils are somewhat volatile, keeping the catnip in a refrigerator or freezer will maintain the potency longer.
