What makes a great and effective cat toy?

I am not a cat owner but I have a friend who is a cat owner and I would like to get something for her cat.

I plan to make a trip out to Petsmart sometime this week or next and I thought while I am there I would get her cat a little gift. (Trying to be romantic I guess xD, yup I am a fool)

I was thinking of just a simple mouse but I hear the toys that you load with organic cat nip are more effective with cats.

Do you cat owners have any suggestions for cat toys?

My cat Leo likes straws, bottle caps, sucker sticks, yarn, small stuffed animals that he can carry around. As for things you can buy my cat likes things with bells in them, stuffed mice, stuff like that. Leo also shows interest in dog toys. Like the long dogs with one eye brow. Leo likes those.

Just buy a laser. It is definitely the funniest toy for a cat EVER!!
Take the laser and spin it around the cat over and over.
Not too fast but not too slow
If you are thinking "Why?" then you will see!

Some cats don’t like cat nip. I had an older cat that had never been introduced to cat nip and she never has liked it but I kitten that I got that always had cat nip loves it…feathers and strings are always loved. If the cat isn’t de-clawed they love scratching posts. Paper bags are also a favorite but aren’t very impressive for your friend. Perhaps find a cat tunnel or those hide-away cat boxes. They love to explore!

Cat nip toys work well. Cats love long stringy/feathery toys, but they tend to make a mess and cats may eat the feathers, it might not be good for your cat, but it depends on the cat some won’t eat them. Cats tend to not like balls, but I did have a box type toy with holes in it, and there where many balls/mouse toys inside. The cat pushed his paws in the toy and tried to catch the balls, he seemed to love it!

many different types of toys are suitably for cats
ping pong balls are cheap lightweight and the cat will have a good time playing cat soccer with them
feather and string toys are good but you have to be careful with them strings can get wrapped around the cats neck,
lasers are fun but avoid it shining in the eyes
    catnip
the furballs love it but they can get a bit rough with you if the get too wound up on it

My cats love pipe cleaners( the fuzzy wires from craft stores) and craft pom-poms. I usually twist the pipe cleaners into a flower shape and my cat goes crazy when I throw it to her. I think these toys remind them of bugs.
