Why do my cats place toys in with their dry food?

They do this when the food is almost gone or some times when the bowl is empty.

Are your cats female? We have had a couple of female cats that did this for a while, as well as putting them in the water dish. The toys were small plush stuffed toys. Sometimes a female cat will develop a mother complex and adopt the toys as her kids. Being a good mother she tries to teach them where to get food and water.

it’s probably the same reason that a dog will bring their food dish to you, they are either trying to tell you to give them more food, or they may be picky, try different foods with them, i have a book on cats, and it turns out certain human foods are safe for cats, you just gotta know which ones. (i gave my cat peanut butter, he sat there for hours trying to get every bit of it off the spoon.) ;-)

The "toy" to your cat, is prey.

So, the captured prey is placed in the same spot all the rest of the food is, aka food bowl.

It’s called storage of food. In the wild, cats will often put uneaten food in a place that is out of sight and often they will also cover it to help hide it. This is why often you will see your cat(s) scratching around the food bowl as in an attempt to cover it up. It just means they are done eating for now, and want to hide the remainder from "others".

You have a very normal cat that also has not lost it’s innate urges.

    Hope this helps

Yes my male adult cat does it too with his wet food. I see his "squirrel toy" on top of the food bowl. I dont know too what brought about this, since we always have dry food lying around but I only serve wet food morning and night.

This is normal. My cats do that every day. Cats will be cats.
