Hi! Im veterinarian and Purina Cat Chow Mentor Doctor Karen Sueda. Bringing a new kitten home is exciting for the whole family. But there are a few things youll want to get ahead of time to make this important transition as fun and enriching as possible for your new feline family member. It all starts with a trip to your local pet supply store! The first thing youll need is a carrier its a must for transporting your kitten home and to and from the veterinarians office. It also gives her a sense of security. Make sure its large enough so she can stand up and turn around. Once you get home, leave the carrier out and let her get familiar with it. You may even want to place some toys or kibble inside to encourage her to enter. That will make being in the carrier a more pleasant experience. Youll also need a litter box and litter. I cover this in more depth in another video in this series. Heres a quick recap: get a manageable size for your new kitten make sure the walls arent too high; place the box in a quiet place away from her food and water; and make sure you clean the box daily. Cats have a natural urge to scratch. Its actually exercise for them partly a stretch, partly to condition their nails, and partly to mark their territory. Get a scratching post right away and encourage your kitten to use it. Grooming tools are also important. Which tool depends on the length of her coat, but start grooming right away so it becomes part of your routine. And dont forget the toys. Whether its a paper ball, an empty thread spool, or something from the pet store, playing is fun, social, and its good exercise. Lastly, your kitten will need a food specially formulated for her needs. Purina Kitten Chow is a great choice. Thanks for watching! And remember that giving your kitten lots of love and affection will help build the foundation for your happy, healthy life together.
