Tattooed fish at Pet Supplies Plus?

I went to pet supplies plus the other day for dog food and stopped in the fish department to look around and I noticed what I believe were silver mollies with purple and orange hearts and polka dots on the sides of them. I asked the girl working there and she said it is dye that is injected into them! What in the world?! I mean this is a big chain! We wouldn’t dye into a cat or dog to make a heart design on them so why do it to a fish? I know some people are going to say it’s just a fish but it’s still a living creature. I’m rethinking doing business with Pet Supplies Plus for sure!
I’m glad everyone is in agreement here, except the first guy but I think he might have been lost….

its awful

yeah, It’s pretty messed up. Ever heard of a jelly bean parrot fish? They probably have them there based on what you are saying. Basically, they take albino parrot fish, and die them blue, orange, pink red, green, sell them, then within about 6 months they die. I bought one not knowing what the deal was- when i foudn out I went back to the pet store and told the lady what they were all about, she stopped carrying them.

If you voice your opinion, you might make a difference! better to try than not!

    good luck

That’s noble of you. I think you should write a letter to the editor of your local newspapers to inform the public of what is going on. Maybe you will inspire others to discontinue business with the chain until they stop injecting fish with dyes. Maybe you can get more info, find out who the fish supplier is or who dyes the fish and write a letter to them as well. Find out what benefits it’s bringing them, why they decided to do it. Some people might think it’s cool, but they obviously don’t value the life they are providing for. Many kudos to you, and thank you for bringing this to my attention!

Yea they do that to a lot of a fish, mostly glassfish of some sort, because they are clear, the most common Ive seen other than the hearts are colors around the edges of its body, not only is it messed up is makes the fish 4x as likely to get a disease, I can understand the appeal but I still think its wrong, and personally I like to view my fish in their natural state, even if its clear!

its "ok" do do it to fish cause fish arn’t cute or cuddly. If the animal is not fuzzy etc ppl don’t care. its a "fish" who cares. that is the mentality. yes it is brutal horrible and just bad. The fish never last long, they do not heal from the injections. they get infections and die. its just a death sentence for the fish.

It was ban in the 60’s but has slowly come back, it is painful to the fish, lowers their immune system and a very small % survive it. You are right, it is a terrible thing, It will do little good, but make your voice heard…tell the GM of that pet SP how horrible a thing it is!

You are a single voice out of millions….. The industry doesnt care what you think, just so long as you buy the product. The fish industry much like any other industry has its fads and right now the injected fish are popular. One of the other fish they use to inject dyes into is the Glass fish. It is completely transparent with the exception of the organs. I know this is fact because I worked in the pet industry for a short time and during that time my employeer and I had some wicked um "discussions" about the ethics of it. Basically they tend to use non lethal dyes although I have heard of some less scrupulous people using whatever they could get their greedy paws on. Think of it this way, they have a tattoo. Thats pretty much what it is. And no the Jelly Bean Parrot is most definitely NOT an albino that has been dyed, its a body type that has been selectively bred to produce a specific shape. Think of things like Crowntail Bettas, Half-moon Bettas and the variety of Goldfish there is today, this is what selective breeding does. Pretty much its not going anywhere but if enough people say to the suppliers to not supply them then they might stop showing up in the stores. Just because a chain carries this one type of fish doesnt mean much, do they have a history of selling sick or seriously damaged fish or selling fish caught using Cyanide (This would be for Saltwater fish only)? If not then give them a chance, I have one store here were the owner was a complete dick but he had good product and his stock was always healthy (I know cause I ended up taking over his fishroom for him) so I gave him my business, just didnt deal with him too often.

ive read of this before, usually done with Himalayan glassfish
off the top of my head remembering the stats something like 80% die within a day of the injected dye, & the remainder die within 2 months very painfully. fortunately ive never seen it in australia, rather strict animal cruelty laws id put it down to but if i did see it id never go back again.
    terrible terrible cruelty

    that is messed up!!!

even if fish arent cuddly or nice to pet doesnt mean they have different rights than a dog or cat. this is pure animal cruelty and if i ever see it at my local petstore i am for sure complaining.
