What over the counter vitamins or supplements can i buy for my cat with feline AIDS?

my cat has feline aids and i love him to death. is there anything i can buy over the counter or a pet supply store that will help expand his life? and what exactly would that product be?

cats that are not showing symptoms of AIDS do not need anything special to "expand his life" just treat him as you would any other cat. if symptoms do arise, or kitty gets a cold, get him to the vet so that they can give the cats meds to get rid of the cold…. good luck!

You really need to discuss treament options with your vet, as his specific test results will determine the treatment option. For normal healthy cats with the diagnoses, usually vitamins with anti-oxidants, and Omega 3/ Omega 6 fatty acids are given and special attention to any infections. Also keeping the cat flea/tick/mite free is very important. However, if your cat is suffering more, for example if his white blood cell count is extremely low, prescription medications would be needed.

A cat with FIV will live over 15 years, the most important thing to do is to feed a GOOD food to keep up what’s left of their immune system.

Also treat the problems as they arise. Which are runny eyes, dry coat and/or mouth problems.

Having Lysine on hand for the runny eyes is a good idea. Most FIV cats have the herpes simplex virus and being on 250 – 500mg of lysine (on their food) a day for a week can clear up the runnynes within a few days.

I’ve heard of people using Transfer Factor, as a supplement, to help the overall health as well. But mostly it’s the good food that’s needed.

BTW there are two very good FIV cat lists on Yahoogroups, come on over and join. The owners there all have FIV cats – in every stage of the disease. Most cats stay asymptomatic most of their lives.
