How to keep barn swallows from building a nest?

We like barn swallows and don’t have anything against them having babies, but, every year, they try to build their nest above our patio. We wouldn’t mind if it weren’t for the fact that they make a mess by doing their "business" all over our patio. We’ve tried a few different methods for keeping them away-a fan (not close enough to hurt them), a rubber snake, a toy cat. Nothing has worked. Any suggestions?

What if you just found something to put under the eaves by the patio temporarily to block that location? Then they could build it around the corner.

Everytime they build a nest halfway, rip it down. They are persistent birds.
