What are some common household or really cheap/simple toys cats really like?

Don’t want to desensitize my cat to all those fancy battery ones! But I still wanna have other ways of playing with him. I’ve heard of empty toilet paper rolls, ping pong balls, and paper bags. Anything else?

Catnip and laser pointers.

edit….I find it very bizarre that so many people recommend the little plastic ring seals on milk cartons. I have a cat that is obsessed with them, and has been for years. She always appears when the new cartons are opened, and will fish them out of the trash if we don’t give them to her. I wasn’t aware that they were so popular among felines.

I do not recommend plastic bags as a toy – ever. All plastic bags are dangerous to pets and small children. Huge risk of suffocation.

Wadded up paper or foil works good. Also milk jug rings or caps. Bottle caps (like from soft drinks). My cats love them. They love paper bags. Don’t let them play in plastic grocery bags, unless you cut off the handles. They can get caught in them. Don’t let them chew string or ribbons – if they swallow it, it can get wrapped around their intestines & kill them.

Empty boxes are a great playground.

Plastic milk jug rings, plastic pop bottle caps, a folded-up strip of paper with string tied around the middle and the other end of the string tied to a doorknob (hard to explain without showing it), crumpled up pieces of paper, a flashlight beam (penlight is even better). One of mine will chase a stick if I move it back and forth in front of him, until he’s worn out.
    Cats are easily amused.

try an empty cardboard box….make your own little kitty cube. Cut some holes in the side for kitty to peek out of or poke a playful paw out of… Our cats loved theirs more than the store bought version. Also the ring off of a gallon milk jug…. a big pile of crinkled up paper in a box or even piled up on the floor..These have been tested on our kitties and have been big favorites with them….

Cats play with almost anything like bags, boxes, feathers, and even cereal!

Some things my cats like to play with are:

Pencils-I hold it above my cat. He loves to try and get it!

Q-Tips-My cats bat this around like crazy! Be careful they don’t eat it.

Carrots and other vegetables-I know it is strange, but my cat likes rolling on carrots in their packages, and other vegetables.

String-Cats love anything long and in the air. They love swatting and biting it.

Milk carton ring-You know those yellow, blue, or pink things on a milk carton that you have to remove around the lid? Well cats love the chase these around.

Cat Tunnels-These can be bought for ten dollars. It is a tunnel that cats enjoy to play in.

    Hope this helps!

I have bought a bag of the big pompom balls in a craft store and my cats love to play with them, fetching, etc. They are too big to swallow, and they are safe.

My cats love those crinkle bags you can get at Wal-mart for 5 dollars, they also like catnip very much, they also like crumpled up paper, especially when they hear it being crumpled up! One of my cats likes to play fetch with a little foam ball you can get them at the pet store they are really cheap. My cats like it when they are stimulated mentally I go around an hide their favorite treats in toilet paper rolls, and in their beds places where they have to look for them and use there brains to get them out. They also like those things with ball in the round track and they can chase the ball with their paws. They also like those feathers on a stick, that you can wave around for them in a good game of chase! They love stuff that makes them use the senses they would use in the wild, to hunt etc. I some how have become the favorite toy, it is so funny when my cat drops his foam football in front of me and begs with his eyes for you to throw it for him!! He must have been a lab or a retriever in a former life!!

Cardboard boxes – not sure why cats seem so drawn to them but I haven’t met a cat yet that doesn’t love them. Cut off the side flaps, flip the box upside down and cut a few cat-sized and paw-sized holes around the sides with a knife.

Twisty ties/milk just rings – my one cat loves to whack these around the floor and even plays fetch with them. I twist the twisty ties into a coil.

Crinkled up balls of tin foil or newspaper – cats love these

Large crinkly shopping bags – cut the handles so the cat won’t get caught in them. Cut a finger-sized hole at the bottom and wiggle your finger in it – prepare to be attacked.
