What are the best toys for cats?

The things my cats have loved the most are things like chasing after a little ball of paper or foil, a ping-pong ball, or a piece of ribbon or string (don’t let them eat it!!!), or playing in a cardboard box with a toy in it, or cut some holes in the box and pull string or other toys in and out of the holes for the cat to "catch". Sounds funny, but the more money I spend on a toy, the less likely the cat is to play with it. In general, cats seem to like things that move or have a crinkly sound.

My cat loves these things. they are 100% catnip, unlike most of the toys in the pet stores.

Anything made of paper and anything with shoe laces seem to be his other favorites. Christmas wrapping is a favorite time for him.

When people say cat’s eyes are good they are often referring to their ability to see in the dark. In fact, while the cat has extra good vision in low light, as far as discerning shapes are concerned their world looks almost like it would to a nearsighted person. Cats are, however, highly attuned to CHANGES in shapes as well as noises and this is what gets them excited and triggers their predator instincts. So a cat isn’t going to be able to tell the difference between the shape of an expensive cat toy ball and a paper ball cat toy. This is where free cat toy testing comes in!

It may be a little embarassing when friends come over and see your cat playing with homemade cat toys. But in any case, if you find one of these free cat toys archetypes that your cat really likes you can go out and try and buy the equivalent expensive cat toy. Do the beta testing with some free cat toys and then spring for something you know your feline friend will like!

My cat loved those ‘koosh’ balls. Or try those bells on a string. You can also try a laser light. Shine it in front of the cat’s paw and let her chase it. Very good exercise.

Please stay away from those glove-style toys, as they encourage rough hand-play (ouch!)

Other than that, watch your cat’s natural play behavior. They’ll show you what they like best if you give them options. Some cats love to bat stuff around (crinkled up newspaper, little balls, plastic easter eggs, etc.) Other cats like feathery toys (bird substitutes!) Mine loves to hide in boxes and paper bags, and loves the "toys on a wand" type toys that you can move through the air. Cat nip toys are fun, and some really love carrying around pretend prey (little mice, etc.) I have a toy basket filled with different kinds of toys and my cat will dig around for her favorites :)

All cats are different. My kitty has basically shown me exactly what she likes and doesn’t like.
Ironically, it’s the simple stuff that she’s crazy over: a ball of paper, shoe strings, an ink pen, and a $0.99 mouse.
I purchased some other things and she could really care less.
I did buy a laser pointer and she LOVES it! She can chase it forever.
Just bring a variety of things and your cat will let you know what’s interesting to it and what’s not.

my cat has this really wierd infatuation with ear plugs and nail files. i have bought her over 50 dollars worth or cat toys and it seems like she only likes the ones that she has found around the house herself, you can never determine what a cat is gonna like

Try catnip and if that doesnt work, try using yarn or something that is a string that the cat can play with. Also crinkled up paper or tags. Anything that is light and can be picked up by the cat
