What are the best toys for cats? and why?
my cat Clyde is a fighter and a bore when it comes to toys, he needs something to entertaain himself when we are gone. and even at home. he is 15, and a short hair, he is a really clumsy one, he loves people. we buy balls, and cat nip mouses but nothing works, the other cats like them, butClyde has his likes/dislikes we need to find him entertainment any suggestions?
cats aren’t often into ’self play" meaning toys that don’t do anything but sit there often don’t attract cats into playing with them. Motorized cat toys often scare cats.
you need to make time to play with him. Get a fishing pole type toy and engage him in play.
If you really want an entertainment suggestion, get another pet. A new kitty might be a good source of enrichment for Clyde (as long as he isn’t anti-social, and it is rare a cat is completely anti-social – it just takes a while to introduce the idea by keeping the kitties separated for a while) or get a bird or a small animal for Clyde to watch (but make sure they are safely away from his claws and teeth)

Adult cats do loose interest in playing very easily, you should buy a Maine Coon cat, they are playful through out there life.

Cats love string and things that wiggle. You should get a catnip mouse on a string. Cats love those.

Honeslty my cat would use a scratch post. The ones that are rectangle and long that lay on the ground cheap ones.. She would just scratch away on that and swat it around. Also laser toys!

It depends on the cat, which is why it’s hard for me to recommend anything. Cats can have such different taste in toys, that you just kind of have to figure out your own cat’s personality. What one cat goes crazy over, the next cat ignores, and so on. For all the toys I have, I have very few that more than one cat likes. Each has their favorites and yet nobody else will like that toy
Some pretty successful toys that are free or homemade are twist ties dropped on the floor, rings from milk jugs, paper or plastic bags, boxes (you can cut small holes in sides for paws to stick out), string, wads of crumpled up paper (golf ball size), cat nip bags (get some scrap fabric and sew it into a 5×5 inch "pillow" with cat nip and a little stuffing inside), etc.
As for store bought things, some of my cats’ favorites are this thing: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753802&lmdn=Cat, feather wands, rabbit fur mice (or any toy made with real rabbit fur), laser pointers, fluffy fabric balls, anything that dangles on a string, and they even actually liked something similar to this http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2755425&lmdn=Cat
Scratching posts, if your cat has claws, are well liked. The downside, again, is different cats prefer different materials. I have one cat who will only use cardboard or wood scratching things, and one who loves carpet and sisal rope and rarely uses the cardboard.
