What type of filling is safe for crochet cat toys?

I want to crochet some toys for my cats, and all I have on hand is some 100% Polyester Fiberfill. Is this safe for cats? If they chew on the toys, and some of the fibers escape, can it be harmful to them? What can I use to safely fill a crocheted cat toy?

Don’t use sponge at all as if accidentally swallowed it will swell in the stomach and cause complications, you could use the same stuffing that comes in bought cat toys and that’s the same we stuff bears with,

but first get a cotton pouch or make one and place stuffing into that then sew it closed tight to be sure none leaks out, better still make the pouch doubled for extra safety, and from time to time examine the toy to be sure it can take the nibbles and rough play from a kitten,

if ever it looks worn don’t let your kitten have it,and one word of advice be care-full with crochet toys as they can get stuck in claws and teeth, supervision is advised, hope this helps.

The filling will come through the holes (even if it’s crocheted tightly). You could put a lining in, sew the filling into a bag made of fabric then put it inside the toy.

Use common fluff, like the stuff in teddy bears. It is inexpensive and can be found at craft stores. I suggest putting some catnip in their too! Your cats will love the toys and have a blast!
